“His last day was surrounded by music and love,” his family told Guinness World Records.

John always liked to say thank you. They added: “On his behalf, thank you to everyone who has cared for him over the years.”

The family said he left behind his daughter, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Tinneswood was born in Liverpool on August 26, 1912, a few months after the Titanic sank. He lived through two world wars, and served in the British Army Pay Corps in World War II.

The retired accountant has revealed his secret to moderation – eating fish and chips every Friday.

Even so, he said earlier this year, “It's just luck.”

“You either live long or you live short, and there's not much you can do about it.”

He said earlier this year that he didn't feel any different at 112, saying: “I don't feel that age, I don't feel excited about it. Maybe that's why I got there.”
