PORSCHE is looking to reverse its electric vehicle policy after the luxury carmaker announced a decline in sales.
The German brand, whose electric vehicle range currently includes the all-electric Taycan and the recently released electric-powered Macan, has admitted it is looking to recommit to developing gas-powered vehicles.
Porsche has used hybrid power in many of its cars Models For years, but in 2019 they finally launched their first all-electric car – the Taycan.
Since then, they have been seen as one of the biggest pioneers of electric vehicles in the automotive world alongside their gas-powered models.
But as I mentioned cars news In Europe, Porsche has begun to experience stagnant sales with its electric cars, selling just 3,394 units of the Taycan through the third quarter of 2024 – down 35% from the previous year.
What's more, in China, Porsche's overall sales fell 29% in September.
“There is a clear trend in the premium luxury segment towards cars with combustion engines, and therefore we will react to our product cycle,” said Lutz Mischke, Porsche CFO.
Regarding the decline in China, which is an important market for Porsche, Mischke added: “We see steep curves for battery-powered cars in China, but luxury is still missing within this segment.”
To that end, Porsche will now refocus its efforts on developing its own internal combustion engines, which will include continuing its gas-powered versions of the Cayenne SUV and Panamera sedan.
Mischke added: “We are currently looking into the possibility that the originally planned electric cars could have a hybrid or combustion engine.
“We are currently in the middle of making conceptual decisions. What is clear is that we are committed to the combustion engine for a much longer period.”
Porsche is currently working on a full-size electric SUV that will be positioned above the upcoming Cayenne EV.
It may seem like this model may eventually get a hybrid setup.
Porsche had previously aimed for half of its sales to come from electric and hybrid vehicles by 2025, with that number rising to 80% by 2030.
It is believed that their electric car sales will rise in 2025, supported by sales of the Macan EV and the new-look Taycan.
Drivers can also get two years of free shipping if they purchase a new Macan priced at $94,000.
The hugely popular small SUV is going fully electric – with the entry-level version finally available to buy and new owners can charge their shiny new electric car for free thanks to an incredibly generous new offer.
Porsche is also ready for some competition, as Mercedes will launch a high-performance electric sports car the next A year to finally rival the Taycan.
The cutting-edge electric car features a custom architecture called AMG.EA, with an emphasis on speed and power, and will compete with the Taycan Turbo S and Audi E-Tron GT RS Performance.
