Let this serve as a reminder of how difficult the job of general manager of a football team can be. Joe Douglas was fired as Jets general manager on Nov. 19, two days after their latest on-field disaster — a frustrating 28-27 loss to the Colts at MetLife Stadium.
Douglas's departure was not frowned upon a bit by Jets rules, and in fact seemed inevitable after coach Robert Saleh was unceremoniously fired five weeks later. Sometimes you can spark a pretty good debate about a GM's fate, because unless a guy does all of Gettleman's job, there's a lot of gray area.
There seemed to be little of that with Douglas, who was hired thanks to a deep history of winning he learned in Philadelphia and was unable to translate that 101 miles northeast of Florham Park.
This Sunday was supposed to be an interesting inter-conference matchup for the Jets, as the Seahawks come to MetLife for an early start at 1 p.m., and we all know how much West Coast teams enjoy games that start when their bodies insist on a 10 a.m. start. the morning.
