A tourist has died after being run over and killed by a delivery truck while sunbathing in Gran Canaria.
The 64-year-old victim was hit by a 4×4 pickup truck in Britain's popular resort of Playa del Inglés while her husband was swimming in the sea.
The driver of the car that struck her failed to stop and, after being tracked down by police shortly after the tragedy, insisted he had no idea he had just hit someone.
The accident occurred near the famous Maspalomas sand dunes, just meters from a beach kiosk believed to be among the people to whom the truck delivered the goods.
It is understood that ongoing police investigations are focusing on why the car was on the beach outside the permitted delivery times of 8am to 11am and whether it was adhering to the designated route.
Officials have not yet confirmed the victim's nationality, but it is understood she is a German woman who was holidaying in southern Gran Canaria.
A spokesman for the Emergency Response Coordination Center run by the regional government said: “A woman died after being run over by a quad on a beach in Gran Canaria.
“The accident occurred at around 12.30pm yesterday in Playa del Inglés in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
“Her death was confirmed after lifeguards on the beach responded with initial medical assistance.
“Police attended the scene along with paramedics.”
Informed police sources said that the driver who ran over the tourist passed alcohol and drug tests.
He has been fully identified but is not believed to have been arrested.
He now faces questioning by the investigating judge assigned to the ongoing case court Investigate the tragedy.
Although cops did not reveal his nationality, he was described locally as 50 years old who had worked at the beach for a decade and knew the area well.
This comes after a holidaymaker was found tragically dead on a Lanzarote beach early last month.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after beachgoers found the 34-year-old's body near Puerto del Carmen.
It was not immediately clear who found the body.
Police launched an investigation but said at the time there was nothing at that stage to suggest the death was suspicious.
Before that, another British man, 35, was found dead in the village of Mojacar, near a popular beach.
Blood was reportedly seen on the walls and floor of the unknown location where his body was found.
It was found near Fantanikas Beach, a popular local spot for visitors to the area.
