Exclusive: Colpa tuya (Your mistake) premieres on Prime Video on December 27, and writer-director Domingo Gonzalez promises it's a step up from the blockbuster first film, Colpa mia (My mistake). The good news for fans of the YA series is that it's getting a third part. Colpa Nostra (Our mistake), which will land in 2025, is even better.
“When you succeed in a first movie, the second movie is often not as good, and then the third movie is less good,” the director tells Deadline. “In this case, people say the second movie is better than the first, and everyone who has seen the third movie says it is the best of the three.”
The films are produced by Pokeepsie Films, part of Banijay Iberia, and Amazon MGM Studios. It stars Nicole Wallace as Noah and Gabriel Guevara as Nick and follows their relationship.
One way the team avoided the second album syndrome was to write the subsequent films before the first film came into the world. González wrote and directed the first film and then collaborated with Sofía Cuenca to write the sequel and trilogy. So everything happened quickly.
Mercedes Ron's “Culpables” trilogy was a New York Times bestseller. The Argentine-born Spanish author's works have sold more than three million copies and achieved more than 100 million reads on Wattpad. But the success of the first film was better than expectations.
On opening weekend, Colpa mia It is ranked among the top 10 Prime Video titles in over 190 countries, including the US, UK, Australia, India, Argentina and France. It is Prime Video's best international original film to date. “Yes, we expected to have this success in Spain, and I wanted to have success abroad; I thought it would be big in Mexico maybe, but not all over the world, in India, in Indonesia, Pakistan, Korea, everywhere,” says Gonzalez. “It was unexpected.”
He was called in after the directors and producers of the Pokeepsie films, Alex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang, optioned the books. They thought they were getting a director, but when Gonzalez delved into the source material, he ended up writing the script.
“I realized I was writing a script, not just taking notes, so I told Karolina, ‘Hey, I already have the script.’ They gave it to Amazon Prime, and they said, ‘This is perfect.’”
Colpa Nostra It is in the publishing phase and will be released in 2025, with a release date not yet confirmed. the Colpa tuya Meanwhile, the film's premiere took place at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Madrid in front of 4,000 people, many of whom were fans and influencers. It's safe to say that the fanbase is strong with this franchise.
Gonzalez says his adaptations add to the humor while improving on events from the book series. “It talks about first love and universal feelings,” he says. And I wanted to have a sense of humor, and it had to be fun and funny. I also wanted the dialogue to be a little more adult.
“When people think of a film for young people, sometimes they think young people are stupid. So, I wanted to have something a little more intelligent. This is a very intelligent generation. I treat them with respect.”
The new film sees the characters as more mature, and the challenges that Noah and Nick face become steadily more mature. Without heading into spoiler territory, there are parts of the second book that parts of the fanbase were against. Gonzalez says that played a role in how he approached Cuenca Colpa tuya scenario.
“It was very difficult to write the script for this book, because the fans didn’t want to see some things,” he explains. “Online, TikTok, Instagram, they were saying, ‘We don’t want to see that. Please, please, don't show it.
“So, we had to approach this part of the story another way. It's similar to the book, not much different, but we did it another way. I think they'll be happy with that solution. The main thing is that I agreed with the things they said.”
With the second film, “Culpable”, due to be released next year, an English version of “Culpable” will be released. Colpa mia – My mistake: London – Also in production.
Prime Video is very much in Ron's business elsewhere as well. Excerpt from the first book of the author's new epic, Demilo Baghetto (Tell me calmly), already in production.
