The attackers shot the local citizen while he was participating in a seasonal dance, according to Agence France-Presse.

Local authorities say another man was killed and a third injured in the attack.

The investigation into the attack is still ongoing and no arrests have been made.

The Chilpancingo Christmas Fair is a major local event in the southern state of Mexico, drawing thousands of revelers to the streets of the city founded in 1591.

Governor Evelyn Salgado took to social media to describe the violent killing as “an unacceptable act that will not go unpunished.”

The authorities did not announce the motive behind this, although extortion and violence related to these practices are routine among powerful Mexican gangs, according to the Associated Press.

Two rival drug cartels are currently locked in a turf war in Chilpancingo – with the Tlacos and Ardilos families facing off in the streets and causing high-profile, low-profile deaths.

Last October, Mayor Alejandro Arcos was murdered by a gang six days after taking office.

Arkus's decapitated body was found in a pickup truck, his severed head covering the roof of the vehicle.
