The taxi driver was said to have suffered a possible medical episode before crashing into the pedestrian outside a Macy's store.

With its elaborately decorated display windows, the store is a magnet for tourists and native New Yorkers during the holidays.

The New York City Police Department confirmed to the US Sun that officers were responding to the scene with “multiple injuries.”

Police and sources said that a nine-year-old child was among the seven injured.

Two 49-year-old women and four other women, ages 19, 37 and 41, were also injured in the chaos.

A 49-year-old woman was shot in the leg, a nine-year-old boy was cut, and a 41-year-old woman was hit in the head and were taken to hospital, police said.

The remaining three pedestrians refused medical care, police said.

Police added that all injuries were not life-threatening.

Pictures obtained by the outlet showed the taxi with several scratches on the side of the vehicle and its front bumper completely torn off.

The NYPD said all six victims were in stable condition, although no information was provided on the taxi driver's condition.

The driver has not been identified and police have yet to make any arrests or charge anyone.

Police are still investigating the scene, but it appears to be an accident.

Footage shared online showed a large fire department presence at the scene.

Herald Square is a vibrant shopping district in the heart of downtown.

The site is home to Macy's flagship store, where thousands of tourists flock to see the store's Christmas decorations.

Dean Moses, a New York Times reporter, was at the scene and obtained footage of the parked taxi, which he said “jumped the curb.”

An eyewitness also told Musa that the wheels of the cab were still turning after it stopped.

The car's hood was up and showed signs of damage.
