Emotions ran hot after a waitress revealed on social media the meaning behind a reversed left check.
In a TikTok video, @realslimsaydie asked: “Anyone else get really scared when the check is upside down?”
She suggested the reason was to hide the tip amount left by customers.
“These people left the tip upside down. 'You know what that means, let's see if you're right,'” she said, before continuing to share the tip amount.
She continued: “15 versus 93, yes, not the worst and not the best.”
Then the response began on Facebook, with 2,881 comments on her video.

“$15 to bring me refills of Dr. Pepper is pretty good,” one commenter said.
“That's a pretty good 16%, and $15 is pretty reasonable,” another replied.
Some posters sympathized with her – one woman wrote: “I always tip big, 30% or more no matter what, because when I was serving tables, I promised God that if I did that, I would never forget where I came from and give it to them.”
Another said: “Oh, these comments are so disappointing.” As a servant, I will have you, girl.”
However, others were less understanding. “It's your boss's job to pay you. Not mine,” one person wrote.
“16%…not the worst, not the best? If you worked 3 tables per hour at this rate for 8 hours, your daily wage would be about $400 after including each hour. Another commented: “At 5 days a week that's 104k a year.”
Another said: “So… above the standard 15%??? Servers really need to find new jobs if they expect a customer to pay you when your boss doesn't.
Sadie – who has 10,400 followers on TikTok – seemed surprised by the strength of the reaction to her video.
She took issue with some commenters and denied that she was complaining about tipping, but seemed to welcome the supportive words of others.
“Thanks girl, you got me,” she responded to one participant.

The topic was also an education for some: “These comments are really surprising to me. 'I thought 20% was the minimum,'” one poster said.
Another exclaimed: “Wait what? I was always taught that you leave it upside down, and if it helps to put it under a plate or a little booklet, if that's a critical tip?”
A former waitress confirmed: “I always leave my coupon upside down… People can be nosy, it's no one's business, it's the server's business to know what his tip is.”
“I was a server for about 15 years and this was common…”
The argument ended up split between TikTok posters who couldn't understand the OP's issue, others who agreed with her and more than a few who claimed they would never tip anyone again.
