A plane carrying about 175 passengers and six flight attendants ran off the runway and crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea.

The plane was landing before it deviated from the runway and collided with the fence on Sunday morning, causing a massive explosion.

Yonhap News Agency reported that the number of victims had risen to 28 people so far.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene, and plumes of smoke were captured in photos rising from the site.

The aircraft involved in the accident was Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, which departed from Bangkok, Thailand.

She added that two people were evacuated to a safe place.

An official at Muan Airport said the airport was dealing with an emergency.

Fire authorities said that a fire was extinguished, and passengers were rescued from the tail of the plane.

The emergency office said the landing gear malfunctioned on the plane.

The office also confirmed that the plane – which was carrying about 180 people – was returning from Bangkok.

Acting South Korean President Choi Sang-mok requested all-out efforts in rescue operations as authorities strive to save passengers.

Emergency officials said they were examining the exact cause of the fire.
