Hilaria Baldwin has found herself in yet another Spanish-speaking dilemma after a video showed the self-proclaimed Spanish woman forgetting how to pronounce a commonly used English word despite being from Massachusetts.
In the clip obtained by the Daily Mail, Alec Baldwin's wife – whose real name is Hilary Hayward Thomas – was cooking a “traditional” Spanish dish for her holiday guests when she uttered the word “onion.”
Dressed in flannel pajamas, the 40-year-old yoga instructor flaunted an authenticity she described in her best Spanish accent.
“I learned this when I was a kid, don't look it up online because you'll learn something different,” Baldwin said in what sounded like a fake-heavy accent while in the kitchen with a friend.
She said the secret to her tortilla dish was not cutting the potatoes “too small.”
As Baldwin continued talking about the recipe, he had trouble remembering the word “onion” as he told the camera: “My husband hates… cipolas.” [onions in Spanish]”.
Fortunately, her friend helped her, reminding her of the English word.
This isn't the first time the actor's wife has been absent when it comes to the English language.
She came under fire in 2015 when she forgot the word “cucumber” during a six-minute segment on the “Today” show.
When preparing “authentic” gazpacho, Baldwin lists the ingredients.
“We have very few ingredients,” she told Telemundo TV host Evi Siskos, who appeared with her that day.
“We have tomatoes, we have, how do you say in English? Cucumbers!”
Fans immediately slammed Baldwin, accusing her of faking her accent while noting that she sounds English in several of her social media videos. Some of her former colleagues also addressed the backlash.
“I went to high school with her. Really lovely person, as I recall, but an all-white girl from Cambridge,” someone posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Another said: I went to high school with her. She was sweet and quite serious about dancing. Her name was actually Hilary Hayward Thomas and she didn't speak her current accent.
“I think she and her brother Jeremy (also cute) grew up in Boston and were white.”
After her heritage was criticized, Baldwin defended herself and admitted that her name was Hillary.
She added: “There are some things that need clarification.” “There were some questions about where I was born, where I was born in Boston… I spent some of my childhood in Boston, some of my childhood in Spain, and my family, my brother, my parents, my nephew, they're all gone.” There is in Spain now, and I am here.”
She also claimed that she grew up speaking English and Spanish and wants to raise her seven children to be bilingual.
