Smith earned his first contract with the Saints last March after impressing at the NFL Combine, which was a series of tryouts for aspiring American football players.
As an Ulster Under-20 Championship winner with Down in 2021, Smith had a bright future in Gaelic football, a sport he has played all his life.
However, after deciding to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL, he began training with Tadge Leder, the kicking coach for the NFL's International Player Pathway Program (IPP).
Along with Monaghan goalkeeper Rory Beggan, Wicklow's Mark Jackson and former Connacht rugby player Drag Leader, Smith attended the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.
After impressing at the Combine and at the pro tryouts, Smyth, a Mayobridge native, was invited to the Saints' training facility before signing a contract.
Practice squad members remain on the books of their original teams as part of a pool of players who will continue to practice and be on hand in the event of injuries.
