A Suffolk County police officer was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries after his patrol car was involved in a horrific accident on a Long Island Expressway Sunday night, according to police.
Suffolk County Police said the accident occurred around 6:10 p.m. near Exit 55 in Brentwood.
The police officer, who suffered serious physical injuries, was transported to an area hospital by helicopter, the department said.
The helicopter landed on the closed portion of the normally busy highway, according to a News Channel 12 crew who was at the scene.
Several cars appear to have crashed between Exits 53 and 55, according to News 12.
More information about the officer's condition was not immediately clear, and the cause that led to the accident was not immediately known.
Detectives from the police department's Major Case Unit were investigating the scene with lane closures affecting the west side through Sunday night.
