Valentine's Day is fast approaching, celebrated annually on February 14th.
It is believed to have been initially established in 496 AD, as a feast day to honor Saint Valentine – a cleric who served persecuted Christians.
However, over the years it has become an occasion for people to express their love for each other – with cards, balloons, flowers and chocolates among the most common gifts.
It is therefore one of the most profitable days of the year for stores including Dollar Tree and Walmart.
Dollar Tree Pricing
Despite the store's name, Dollar Tree has recently added items that cost more than $1 to its inventory.
Most items in the store cost no more than $1.25, but items in the Dollar Tree Plus section cost up to $5.
Dollar Tree introduced Plus lanes to 100 locations in 2019 as part of its efforts to diversify its products.
By 2022, Dollar Tree had added items to more than 1,500 locations.
“We believe that testing additional price points above $1 for Dollar Tree products will, over time, enable us to expand our assortments, introduce new products and meet more of our customers' daily needs,” Michael Witinsky, president and CEO, said in a statement.
“Our brand promise is that customers get great value for what they spend at Dollar Tree. We will continue to strongly protect that promise, regardless of price point.”
In fact, in 2024, it is estimated that consumers will spend a whopping $25.8 billion on the romantic getaway, with the average shopper spending $185.81.
Among Dollar Tree's most popular Valentine's Day offerings are wall signs, figurines, and wreaths — all perfect for decorating a romantic table.
