Buddy the Elf has seen better days.

After his reprising of the title character from 2003 went viral dwarf – As a beer-drinking, cigarette-smoking babysitter, no less – Will Ferrell explained the thought and preparation process behind the stunt.

“I think Buddy the Elf got laid off from the North Pole,” multi-hyphenates Travis Kelce and Jason Kelsey joked on a recent episode of their show. New heights Podcast.

The moment happened at the Dec. 29 hockey game between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers, a week in the making — just for the feels. The commentators joked that Ferrell's behavior and commitment to the part made it unclear whether or not he was actually enjoying the match. Meanwhile, social media users made plenty of jokes, with movie references deeming this version of Buddy the Elf an “Antarctic elf” and saying he was finally fired because he didn’t meet his gift-making quota.

“He drinks beer and smokes a cigarette,” the comedian explained. “It was just… I have these weird thoughts every now and then. I told my wife — because we're season ticket holders for the Los Angeles Kings, and we have seats right on the glass, which is amazing — I said, 'Oh my God, during halftime, this is going to be funny.' If I just got a boyfriend.’ Goblin costume and I haven’t shaved for about a week, and I’m sitting there with a candy cigarette, and I’ll sit there for a while and see how people react. And that was it.

“[People were] Like, what does he do? Is he promoting something? “But sometimes I like to do weird things like that just to spice it up.”

Late last year, the writer and actor thought dwarfLegacy of a Christmas Classic: “It continues to grow by leaps and bounds, and it continues to establish itself as a sort of holiday classic for people. “I'm very lucky to have a movie like this on my list,” he said.

A staple to rewatch during the holiday season, Jon Favreau's comedy follows Buddy the Elf as he journeys to New York City in search of his biological father (played by the late James Caan) after he's finally let into New York City. The secret truth is that he is the only human in Santa's powered workshop at the North Pole. The ever-light-hearted film stars Zooey Deschanel as Elf's lover, along with Ed Asner, Mary Steenburgen, and Bob Newhart, who features a special appearance by Favreau.
