Jessica Simpson, who has listed her massive Los Angeles mansion in Hidden Hills at $17 million, is a “really smart” move to “fight” Eric Johnson in their divorce.
According to legal expert and certified family law specialist Goldie Schon, who specializes in complex custody and divorce cases, Jessica's move to list her home in the desirable Hidden Hills neighborhood is particularly well thought out.
“She has put her house in Hidden Hills up for sale and it is a very lucrative area, and I am sure most of the public knows there are many celebrities there and it is located in the Calabasas neighborhood.
“Many celebrities live in this closed community.
“The possibility is that she may not be living in this residence very much, and it is a property that may need to be sold for division purposes in their divorce, or perhaps just money that she can use to provide to Eric as part of the acquisition of their divorce, so that this can be settled in a quicker manner.”
However, Goldie noted that the timing of Jessica's listing was well thought out, as her price was reduced to $17 million after she initially listed the property for $22 million in 2023.

“Right now, quite frankly, it's a good time to put a house on the market, unfortunately, based on the fact that we had a disaster that happened right here in Los Angeles, in one of the most lucrative areas of Los Angeles, the Pacific Palisades.
“It would not be surprising for someone who lives in the Palisades area to buy a home in Hidden Hills.
“The fact that she put it on the market and lowered the price than it was a few years ago, I think this house is going to sell very quickly, and that will probably help Jessica with some liquidity, so she has liquid money that she can play with to try to settle the divorce with Eric on a quicker basis.”
As first reported exclusively by The US Sun, Jessica, 44, listed her stunning Hidden Hills home for $17 million on January 11.
Jessica and her family fled the property amid the Los Angeles wildfires after she took to Instagram on January 9 to share a photo of her backyard with smoke seen heading toward the property.
The house is not believed to have been affected by the bushfires.
The home's listing says it offers seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms.
It has also been featured once in Architectural Digest.
It sits on 2.25 acres and offers city and mountain views.
Jessica says “it's over”
Goldie also thought the timing of Jessica's announcement of her breakup with Eric was well calculated.
“What's interesting to me is that Jessica decided to go out on her own, and quite frankly, she was just hanging around town, basically showing the public in her non-verbal way that she was no longer involved with Eric without wearing her wedding ring.
“I think that's a tactic that a lot of celebrities use, to tell the audience in their own way without really telling the audience.
“She's decided to come out and tell the world, this is really over, we're trying to sort this out, and it's a really difficult time for me, so please give me my privacy, and I'm sure a lot of people in the audience will be a big team with Jessica.”
Gouled described Jessica as an “icon,” who has gained fans from many iterations of fame including her music, marriage, reality show with Nick Lachey, and her Jessica Simpson group.
“She's truly an icon. I mean, you have so many years in the spotlight. You have so many different age groups that really adore Jessica.”
“I think she came out to say to the audience: ‘Hey, look at me. I'm fine. “I don't want you to get into my dirty laundry, but I want to tell you guys that I'm fine, but it's just the way it is. 'It's really over, and I'm going to fight for my kids and I'm going to fight for my money.'
“So, I think that's really her thing at this point, especially because it wasn't a joint statement, it was just her coming out and telling everyone about it.
Goldie said she thought Jessica and Eric had likely been separated for some time, and were perhaps preparing a joint statement, but it clearly didn't work out that way.
Jessica Simpson's separate statement
In January 2025, Jessica confirmed her split from Eric Johnson.
In a statement to People magazine, the design mogul said: “Eric and I were living apart and going through a painful situation in our marriage.
“Our children come first, and we focus on what is best for them.
“We are grateful for all the love and support given to us, and we value privacy now as we work through this as a family.”
“I think they were probably trying to find a way out in a common way, and I think that honestly didn't happen as they didn't have common ground.
“Otherwise, I think we would have seen a joint statement based on the fact that neither of them have worn their wedding rings in public for a while, since before the holidays.
“I think there may have been some conversations before that, and there was supposed to be a joint statement, and obviously they didn't come to a consensus that they could do that, which is why she leaked it slowly.” “Guessed Goldie.
PRENUP?
“The public understands that there is a prenuptial agreement in the marriage relationship between Jessica and Eric, so there is a prenuptial agreement. Based on that, I will assume, of course, that I don't know for sure, but I will assume that there is a clause in their agreement that says they won't Either of them gets spousal support, or there's some sort of arrangement as to how the spousal support will get paid, or some lump sum.
“From what I can tell again, we're in a quiet situation, and we're not seeing a lot of retaliatory press on Eric after Jessica's announcement, so I have to believe that Eric won't be as aggressive as he might be, at least he's not trying to fight this fight publicly.
Goldie said she believes any prenuptial agreement would likely be thoughtful.
“So, what could possibly be going on with a prenuptial agreement at this point? They've only been married for 10 years, and that makes me think it's clear that this prenuptial agreement was created sometime in 2014 or 2013 and by attorneys.” “Very experienced people were on both sides of the aisle to prepare and sign this prenuptial agreement.”
As for how this happened, Goldie says that's not yet clear, but she hopes Jessica and Eric can handle this calmly for the sake of their family.
