COSTCO has imposed a “purchase limit” on Pokemon cards after customers went crazy and snapped up valuable collectibles.
Frantic customers were seen wrestling and screaming as they tried to get their hands on the Pokemon groups amid frenetic scenes.
A man hugged another man from behind in an attempt to snatch two boxes of collectibles from him.
The man carrying the boxes made a fatal strike with his elbow on the other's jaw, but he still did not release his fist.
“Get off me,” he shouted and tried to wriggle free.
“He's been here since seven in the morning,” another person shouted.
Onlookers tried to defuse the situation but the store remained chaotic as members rushed around clutching their valuable cards.
A user on the Costco Reddit posted a photo of what looks like a coupon for a select number of Pokemon cards.
The photo was accompanied by a comment: “Happy to see her, especially after all the violence I saw yesterday,” apparently referring to the ugly scenes in the video.
The token imposes a “limit of two units.”
Another Reddit user who appears to work at Costco said: “I think we might have an employee near the pallet to make sure they are [customers] “knows.”
This suggests that there will be workers at Costco guarding the Pokemon card section to enforce the purchase cap.
Others fear for the safety of guard staff.
“May God have mercy on that employee, hopefully he won’t get hurt in the process,” one said.
Another warned: “It won't be long until a staff member is seriously injured by this behavior.”
It has been suggested that Costco branches “may want to have two employees” to guard and “threaten to revoke the membership” of any troublesome Pokémon catchers.
Some Costco stores are already choosing to sell the cards from the back of the bins, so customers must walk past an employee to pick them up.
This isn't the first time Costco has had to impose a limit on the number of Pokemon cards its members can purchase at once.
In November, around Black Friday, customers reported seeing signs enforcing a “limit of three” on mini Pokemon assorted five-packs.
The Sun has reached out to Costco for comment.
Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines
Costco has strict membership usage rules that shoppers must follow, and they have been cracking down on violators in recent years.
- Use basic members: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to be shared in purchases as the image on the card must match the person using it.
- Home card: Each Basic Member can add one free Home Cardholder who lives at the same address. This person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
- Guest policy: Members can bring up to two guests per visit to Costco. However, only a member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by the member.
- Authorized card holderFor an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will get their own card and can shop independently.
