Captain James Tavernier is another person who has had to endure grumbling from Rangers fans at times.

Speaking after the match, he praised Desser's ability to “always rise above” the noise and spoke of his delight at having rewarded his team-mate for his efforts.

Former Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield, part of BBC Scotland's panel of pundits for the game, echoed those sentiments.

“I think 25,000 people here like him and 25,000 don't like him, but he seems like a very relatable, very likable person,” Arfield said. “He seems like a good teammate.

“Any good striker wastes a chance, he doesn't care. They have this selfishness. He comes back for more and that's what you want.”

Arfield also made an interesting comparison with a player he and Tavernier played with at Ibrox.

“I played here with Alfredo Morelos and he didn't really care how bad he was in games. It was his greatest attribute because he just came back for more.

“I was a player who might have had that low level of insecurity, but the best people didn't get it.

“They've got this absolute bulletproof mentality. The Dessers have a little bit of that.”
