Shoppers at a retailer have been forced to change their breakfast habits after one of their favorite staple foods was discontinued.
Costco members are terrified that their favorite bakery pies have changed beyond recognition.
Large cakes, popular for their generous size, have been downsized to more manageable dimensions in a change that started gradually but is now spreading across more retailer locations.
Furthermore, flavors have been replaced and the new releases are no longer receiving well with fans on social media.
“I'm not a fan of the donut change at Costco,” one poster wrote on Reddit.
“You can only buy one box for $7, the chocolate muffins taste bad, the pumpkin muffins fall apart into tiny pieces, and the almond poppy seed muffins are being discontinued.
“I'll skip buying cakes from now on.”
To make matters worse, the cost of snacks has risen.
Previously, two six-piece packages of large cakes cost $9.99, but now they cost $6.99 for one eight-piece package.
One fan who posted on the Costco subreddit found that the new versions are 58% more expensive than the originals.
Commentators were divided over the merits of the change.
“It's so dry! The old one was moist and delicious. The new one looks like it's been left out and has a weird aftertaste,” one person said.
“I couldn't even get my kids to eat whole chocolate chip muffins. You know they're bad when kids don't eat them,” another commented.
While a third member said: 'I just want to fix my basic blueberry muffin.'
“I don't need new flavors (especially when they have more added sugar than the topping, because I liked that they weren't too sweet).”
“This change really eliminates any chance they would buy me like they have done with other staples in the last few years.
“They continue to make it easier for me to spend less in their stores with these options.”
Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines
Costco has strict membership usage rules that shoppers must follow, and they have been cracking down on violators in recent years.
- Use basic members: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to be shared in purchases as the image on the card must match the person using it.
- Home card: Each Basic Member can add one free Home Cardholder who lives at the same address. This person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
- Guest policy: Members can bring up to two guests per visit to Costco. However, only a member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by the member.
- Authorized card holderFor an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will get their own card and can shop independently.

Divided opinions
The post attracted more than 1,000 comments on Reddit, and while many were upset by the changes, others were all in favor of them.
“It's so much better… My family likes the new cakes so much more.
“It's made with butter. And it doesn't seem like it grows mold in a week either,” one fan said.
But it seems that the bakeries in the store have not mastered the new method of making them.
“I've had some batches that were really moist and really flavourful. I've had some that were too baked and too dry,” one shopper said, adding:
“I think they're still working out the kinks with just the new butter recipe.”
Muffins are the latest breakfast favorite to be discontinued.
A 12-pack of mini cinnamon rolls from Costco also disappeared in the past two weeks.
Pepsi fans are preparing for the ongoing change that will see Coca-Cola brought back to the retailer's food halls.
