Philip Rucker joined CNN as senior vice president of editorial strategy and news, leaving The Washington Post after 20 years.
Rucker was most recently national editor at The Washington Post, the latest senior journalist to leave the publication. Others who have recently exited include Josh Dawsey, who joined the Wall Street Journal, and Ashley Parker and Michael Shearer, who joined the Atlantic. Managing editor Mattia Gould has left for The New York Times, where she now works as Washington editor.
At The Washington Post, Rucker also served as deputy national editor, senior Washington correspondent, and White House bureau chief. He joined The Washington Post in 2005 as a local news correspondent. He also played a central role in teams that won three Pulitzer Prizes, including in 2024 for a series examining the AR-15; and in 2022 to cover the January 6 attack on the Capitol; and in 2018 to cover Russian interference in the 2016 election. He is the co-author, with Carol Leunig, of A Very Stable Genius: Donald J. Trump's Test of America; And follow up Only I Can Fix It: The Disastrous Final Year of Donald J. Trump.
Rooker will be based in CNN's Washington, D.C., bureau. It will start on February 10th.
