Grande, who was in a London hotel during a press conference for the film when her name was mentioned, headed to the location. evil “I screamed at every member of our family who was nominated,” the actor says, giving a group talk, admitting to tears in our Zoom chat. “What an extraordinary morning and day for us.” evil family.”
evilChu, directed by Jon M. Chu, follows the story of Elphaba (played by fellow Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo), a young woman misunderstood for her unusual green skin and immense capacity for magical power. Privileged and cunning, Glinda is a popular young woman who wants to practice magic. When the two meet as students at Shi's University in Oz, it generates a rivalry that turns into a deep friendship.
Below, Grande speaks to Deadline immediately after the Oscar nominations were announced.
DEADLINE: In a way, you nailed it playing Glinda. Now that you've got that Oscar nomination right off the bat, this should be a sure thing for you.
Ariana Grande: It's very overwhelming and definitely feels like you said. I've been performing since I was eight and I've been doing this for so long, it's like you don't expect this kind of thing. It's my first film and being able to play this role has been the greatest gift of my life. You don't think in your wildest dreams that you'll be nominated for an Oscar, you know what I mean? It's a nice feeling to be in this company that I've admired my whole life. And also to get that warm welcome and confirmation that maybe I'm finally in the right place. It's nice for the work to be recognized. It's the best gift of my entire life, to be able to do this.
DEADLINE: What does playing Glinda mean to you?
Grand: It was the greatest gift of my life to throw into this. It's something I wanted more than anything else in the world. A lot of people say I showed it, but my mother taught me at a very young age that this is just a small piece of the puzzle, and that gifts like this should be earned. I am grateful for her every day. I learned a lot from her. I was healed through her, and she will be with me forever.
DEADLINE: You recently mentioned that you'll be focusing more on acting now. I'm wondering what that means for you in terms of career goals. What kind of space do you want to carve out for yourself in this industry?
Grand: I'm really inspired by great characters. The reason I was so grateful to play Glinda is because there was both comedy and drama in it. Comedy can't land or play without someone with a heartbeat underneath and without there being some pain and drama. Glinda's emotional arc is my favorite thing about her. between [the first and second movie] You get to know it on deeper levels and I love being able to fall in love with the characters and being able to hide little parts of myself in them and find little homes in them. I look forward to finding the next right home. I don't know yet, but I'll know what's right when I read it, when I see it. I really like characters that have a lot of nuance and layers.
Delivery time: Evil: for good It will be out later this year. What are you fans excited for?
Grand: I'm excited for them to really get to know Glinda, because a lot of people have a lot of opinions about her not getting the broom [with Elphaba]. In the second film, we see people facing the consequences, looking inward, and becoming who they truly are. Good Glinda is really good Glinda. I'm excited for people to see the ways you're evolving into that. I love her. I'm also excited for people to see all of these characters face repercussions and develop and become different things because we're all left with two choices when things happen to us. How do we grow? What do we choose? So it's exciting and everyone is very good at it.
