Earlier, there was a big upset when world number one Luke Humphries lost 6-3 to local champion Jermaine Watimena, ranked 35.

After trailing 2-0, Dutchman Watimena won five straight encounters while throwing some impressive darts at an average of 98.86, more than seven points higher than Humphreys, before holding his nerve and unleashing his volley to spark wild celebrations.

Watimena will face world number four Rob Cross in the quarter-finals, after the English player defeated Richard Veenstra 6-3 in the opening match.

The partisan crowd in Den Bosch had plenty to enjoy in seven of the eight first-round matches involving Dutch players.

They were also thrilled when Raymond van Barneveld went back years to stun Chris Dobie in an 11-legged thriller.

The 57-year-old was visibly emotional after he hammered out a 144 in the first leg to beat Dube 6-5, after the Englishman missed a dart in the match.

This was one of many exciting matches on Friday evening, and came after top seed Stephen Ponting narrowly beat Dutch hope Gian van Veen in another 11-game battle.

Ponting sits first in this tournament after winning the Bahrain Masters last weekend, but the Liverpool player was forced into a play-off by Van Veen.

He held his nerve in the final set to defeat the World Youth Champion 6-5 and advance to the quarter-finals where he will face Van Barneveld.

Home fans were also delighted with home favorite Kevin Deutz's 6-1 win over world number 11 Nathan Aspinall.

Doets will next play second seed Gerwyn Price, who comfortably beat Dani Nobert 6-2.
