Igan Bernal, the former Tor de France champion, won his first race since his crash that threatens his life in 2022.

Bernal, 28, of the British team Inos Greenaders, won the national trial championships in his homeland, Colombia, overcoming Walter Vargas in seven seconds and teammate Inus Brandon Smith Rivera in 29 seconds.

Bernal left fighting for this life after a trial tradition training near Colombia, Bogota, in January 2022. He needed spine and other procedures after he was subjected to back, leg, knee and chest injuries.

He said at the time, while he was recovering: “After I got a 95 % chance to become paralyzed and almost lost my life, I do what I like to do more, I want today to thank God.”

Bernal was traveling at a speed of more than 50 km/hour when he collided with a fixed bus, in a year in which many bicycles suffered from trial training accidents on public roads.

One of the main contestants in INEOS for the general classification victories and a famous member of the Pro-Peloton, Bernal won the Tour De France Award for 2019 in 22 years, which is sky.

However, after giving up the tour in 2020 due to a back injury, Bernal's only victory in Grand Tour was so far in 2021 Giro d'Talia.
