The Ministry of Governmental efficiency (DOGE) pledged to “simplify” the credit card program of the federal government on Tuesday, which cost the taxpayers about $ 40 billion last year.
“The United States government currently has ~ 4.6 million active credit cards/accounts, which have treated ~ 90 meters unique transactions for $ 40 billion in spending in the 24th year,” read a post from the official account of the cost initiative.
The group added: “Doge works with agencies to simplify the program and reduce the costs of the official.”
Dog said that she “will submit a report in one week” with her plan to break the system.
The work statistics office data indicates that the federal government is hiring a little more than 3 million people in 2024 – which means that the most active credit cards in a file with federal government agencies are more than employees.
The Public Services Department, which runs the program, indicates that government contractors may also be eligible for credit cards.
DOGE's spending data is generally available on GSA.
Since 1998, GSA has managed to manage the program, which issues credit cards associated with the main banks of millions of employees in more than 250 federal agencies and original American tribes.
GSA recounts that the alleged “Smartpay” system enables government workers to “make purchases on behalf of the federal government to support the mission of their agency” by “processing transactions”.
The agency's website states that the current system results in an “increase” in “accountability” and “effective and effective” in determining “fraud, waste and abuse of use.”
For decades, the federal government was afflicted with scandals that involve the use of taxpayers -funded credit cards.

The DOD Inspector General report, which was released last month, found $ 500,000 in transactions that were conducted in casinos, mobile phone applications, bars, night clubs and major sporting events, including Super Bowl.
IG found that 3.9 million transactions, totaling $ 1.2 billion, were not reviewed by supervisors.
