Israel is offering more than £240 million for the safe return of hostages still held by Hamas.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Palestinians in Gaza who helped his forces recover the 65 or so prisoners would receive $5 million – £3.9 million – for each one who returned safely.

Netanyahu made the offer during a visit to the Strip, accompanied by new Defense Minister Israel Katz.

He said: “Whoever comes to us as a hostage will find a safe way out for himself and his family.”

“We will also provide $5 million to each hostage.”

But he also issued a warning to those still holding men, women and children captive more than a year after 251 people were kidnapped in the October 7 massacre.

He said: “Whoever dares to harm our hostages will pay the price.”

“We will hunt you down and we will find you.”

During his visit to the Strip on Tuesday, Netanyahu insisted that he would not allow Hamas to rule in Gaza once the conflict ends.

He said: “We are destroying its military capabilities in a very impressive way, and we are moving to its governing capabilities. Hamas will not be in Gaza.

“Israel is also doing everything in its power to locate and return the hostages.

“We will not give up. We will continue to do this until we reach them all – the living and the dead.”
