The construction began in 1992, led by the Scottish company Miller, but the design was the work of the German engineering company Dywidag Systems International, in partnership with the ARUP Civil Engineering Company.

The main arc extends over a total distance of 1.5 miles, and its height is about 35 meters, allowing the removal of 30 meters for boats at the high tide. The bridge provided a faster and more efficient path for the local population to reach the mainland.
Before its construction, which costs an estimated 28 million pounds, the residents faced long queues during the summer months of the Kyle of Lochalsh to Kyleakin on Skye Island.
The decision to impose losses to cross the Sky Bridge, which escalated from only 40 pixels to 11.40 pounds, raised a bridge title in Europe.
