President Donald Trump in fact announced on Saturday night that “great progress” was made during trade negotiations at the end of the week with China.
During the meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, between American officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Pesin, and a Chinese delegation, “many things” and “many were discussed [was] He agreed to that.
A major breakthrough has not been announced in the discussions that lasted for more than 10 hours, according to Associated Press, and negotiations are scheduled to continue on Sunday.
The administration announced a round of definitions on April 2 and later imposed a 145 % tariff on Chinese goods.
After reducing the mutual tariff for other countries for 90 days to the foundation line by 10 %, China raised the customs tariff on American goods to 125 %.
On Thursday, Trump told the White House correspondents China “a lot” who wanted to make a deal and end the sharp tariff battle.
While the president did not provide many details on Saturday night, the agreement was described as “a complete reset that has been negotiated in a friendly, but constructive manner.”
“We want to see, for the benefit of China and the United States, in an openness to China to American works,” Trump wrote in The Post. “Great progress!”
Trump, a long -standing supporter, has argued that “fair” duties can address the country's record $ 1.2 trillion of trade deficit from 2024 and encourage the return of American manufacturing functions.
Pesin said in April that the definitions may cost China up to 10 million jobs, making the Chinese definitions not sustainable.
“Even if there is a decrease in the definitions, they may lose 5 million jobs,” Bessent told reporters at the White House.
