With white beaches and crystal clear water that can compete easily with the Maldives, this wonderful island has been abandoned in 1961 – and it is now subject to a huge renewal plan
A huge island written in dark history was abandoned more than 60 years ago, after the remaining family remained to the mainland of the United Kingdom.
With amazing beaches that resemble sugar, turquoise water and rich wildlife – you expect these picturesque islands to be a tourist magnet located in the ideal Caribbean. But Taransai – which is already consisting of two islands connected to the isthmus of sand – is located in the external hybrids, the longest archipelago in the British islands.
They were cut off off the northwestern coast of Scotland, and it is believed that civilization on the island dates back to 300 AD, when it was the home of “pagan Celtic”. According to TARANSAI FADDLERS, their grandchildren turned into Christianity in the seventies and in the twentieth century, the island was seized by Nurse Vikings.
“Throughout history, the location of the fierce battles, as in the Taransai massacre in 1544, was when Morrison Lewis invaded,” says the group. “However, this act did not pass without punishment as people were forced from Bernri Island the invaders on the rock, where they were executed. This rock is now known as Sgeir Bhuailte – Smitten Rock.”

But the residents began to diminish, and by 1961 only one family lives on the island. That year, Macrae moved to the mainland – TARANSAY was mostly used to graze sheep. It was not until 2000 that the island would launch fame, after using it as a BBC TV program – which attracted spaces of tourists from all over the United Kingdom.
About 11 years later, the island was sold to Adam and Kathra Keeler only two weeks after going to the market for only two million pounds. In inflation, this will be 2.9 million pounds in today's funds.
But instead of requesting permission to convert the island into a concrete forest of hotels – the spouses are designed to return the island to the Bronze Age. “When we took off all the sheep in 2019, there was an immediate explosion of flowers and wildlife, but then huge herbs began to strangle that wildlife because there were no mammals there to eat grass,” Kathra told the Times.
“If we leave it without helping us by re -introducing mammals, it will not necessarily turn well. It is not only about leaving it; it is about to retract the damage we have made.”
Taransai is now the focus of the renewal project that aims to restore plants and animals to the pre -blue era, as well as preserving the rich human and archaeological heritage of the island. This plan includes six steps to clean the island, implement more balanced grazing, support biological diversity, preserve human heritage, includes the local community, and help reduce the effects of climate change.
Boat trips to the island will work regularly during the summer months, depending on the weather. The ship is left from Horbost Beach on Harris Island, starting at 9 am, with only eight passengers per corridor – and takes about 20 minutes.
