Virginia University President James Ryan resigned on Friday amid an investigation into the Ministry of Justice in the policies of diversity, shares and listing in the school.
“I am writing, with a very heavy heart, to inform you that I resigned as President of Virginia University,” Ryan said in a letter to the school community.
He said: “To summarize a long story, I tend to fight for what I believe in, and I believe in depth in this university. But I cannot make a single decision to fight the federal government in order to save my own job.”
The Ministry of Justice confirms that Ryan refused to comply with President Trump's executive order that directs public universities to dismantle its “discriminatory” programs.
“Time runs shortly, and wearing a gentle administration's patience,” read a message on June 17 sent from the head of the Civil Rights Department at the Ministry of Justice, Harmet Delon, to the UVA board, according to the New York Times.
Delon Ryan had previously warned in a letter on April 28 that her office had received complaints that UVA was not in compliance with Trump's order prohibiting Dei.
The perpetrator stated that some members of the Board of Directors met with Ministry of Justice officials to find out what can be done to end the investigation of possible civil rights violations by UVA and that they told Ryan that Ryan needed to step down.
Ryan has argued that he would be “Quixotic” and “seems selfish and centered around himself” to take over the Trump administration at the risk of loss of federal financing of the school and losing its ability to accept foreign citizens on student visas.
“Although there are very important principles in playing here, I am very practical to keep my job for another year while sacrificing others intentionally and risks in this society,”
He said: “If this is not clearly linked, then you may have followed a different way.” “But I couldn't cause good and direct harm to my colleagues and our students in order to maintain my own position.
“It was an honor to be your president.”
In a separate message to the members of the Board of Directors, Ryan indicated that his resignation will be effective “no later than August 15,” according to the Times.
The Trump administration went after several schools because of its alleged failures to combat anti -Semitism on the campus and DEI programs, including Columbia University, which traveled to Trump's demands and Harvard University, which is fighting the administration in the courts.
