Sean Murphy, Master's champion, moved to the last 16 World Championships of Snooker by winning 10-4 in a high-quality match with Daniel Wales for the first time.
Murphy, 42, aims to win the second world title after 20 years of his first success, but he may face the first world in the next round.
Against Wales Wales, the Sheffield crowd has been dealt with a wonderful offer of snooker with each frame witnessing a break of at least 50, including six centuries – three of each player.
Murphy won the Master in January and looks forward to becoming the first player since Trump in 2018-19 to win that tournament and the world championship in the same season.
After the first session on Tuesday, Murphy occupied 7-2 progress and expanded this with a 53rd break, to transfer two frameworks of victory.
But Wales, 49 in the world, has achieved excellent rest periods from 115 and 68 to pulling two frames back, before Murphy moved one frame away from 133.
Then he won the victory with a break 71 in the final frame.
Trump Chu Yuilong leads 6-3 in the tie of the first round, which will be completed on Wednesday evening (19:30 GMT).
